How this is calculated
Missed calls a year is your weekly call volume times the share you miss, times 52. Only the portion that would have closed counts as lost revenue — a missed call that was never going to book isn't money you lost — so that figure is multiplied by your close rate on answered calls, then by your average job value.
calls/week × missed% × 52 × close rate × average job value = revenue lost per year
The estimate is deliberately conservative. It counts only first-job revenue — not the repeat visits, service plans, or referrals a customer brings over their lifetime — and it ignores the calls that reach voicemail and never call back, which most owners never see at all.
Common questions
- How much revenue do missed calls actually cost a service business?
- It depends on volume and job value, but the arithmetic is unforgiving: a business taking 60 calls a week that misses a quarter of them, closes 40% of answered calls, and averages $350 a job loses roughly $109,000 a year in first-job revenue alone.
- What percentage of calls do home-service businesses miss?
- Owner-operators commonly miss 20–40% — the calls that land while they're on a job, on another line, or after hours. Missed calls cluster in evenings and weekends, exactly when homeowners with an emergency are dialing.
- Do customers call back if nobody answers?
- Often they don't. A homeowner with a burst pipe or a stained carpet works down the list until someone picks up, so an unanswered call usually becomes a competitor's booked job rather than a callback.
- How do you stop missing calls without hiring a receptionist?
- An AI receptionist answers every call on the first ring, day or night, quotes from your own price book, and books the job on a real calendar slot. Avero does this on the phone plus SMS, WhatsApp, website chat, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram — you can call the live demo to hear it.
